September 27th -- Two guests brought messages to our Tuesday luncheon.
Michael Shur, from Boy Scout Troop 130, presented a speech to complete his communications merit badge. Recently, Michael finished his Eagle Scout project, building a bridge near GRMC. He is completing his merit badges so he can complete his requirements for his Eagle Rank.
Additional Speaker: Dr. Shepard, new President of WNMU
Dr. Shepard: The new President of WNMU visited the Kiwanis to share his vision of the university and the community connection to be strengthened in the years to come. Dr. Shepard is the previous vice-president for administrative services and finance at Florida Gulf Coast University and has more than 15 years’ experience in upper level education. Dr. Shepard and his wife, Marcela, have two children. She is working with children of San Lorenzo elementary school, sharing lessons in Spanish. Dr. Shepard is also a former Kiwanis member. On Friday, October 7th, Dr. Shepard will be officially installed as the 15th President of Western New Mexico University. A reception for alumni, faculty, staff and students is scheduled for 1:30 pm in the Student Memorial building, then there will be an inaugural ceremony at 3:30pm at the Fine Arts Auditorium. His speech them will be on “Transforming the Future Together.”

September 13th--Special guest from Una Mano Amiga Cancer Patient Navigator Program presented to the group. Rebecca Castillo shared the wonderful news about the free program.
The Una Mano Amiga Project is a free service to help you and your family before and after a cancer diagnosis. They show you options and choices available so you can make the best decisions. Cancer Patient Navigators identify and eliminate barriers that prevent you from getting the right care, at the right time and by the right person. They educate about a diagnosis, help to get access to health insurance and low cost screenings, find transportation to appointments/treatments, arrange child care when needed, connect patients with supports groups and much more. They also have a cancer patient library on site at their 3031 Hwy 180 E address (Grant County Business and Conference Center).This program is made possible from a partnership of The Border Epidemiology Center, NMSU Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Grant County Health Council and Gila Regional Medical Center.

September 6th- Special guests were Debra and David Melcher of Honor Flight New Mexico and Pat McIntire on Grant County's three day kidney disease awareness tour in New Mexico. Both presenters hand outs are attached here.

August 30th- Special guest was Nancy Gordon, Volunteer for the "Help Restore Silver City Waterworks Community Service Project."
Nancy gave a powerpoint presentation of the history of the Silver City Waterworks Building, built in 1887. A crew of volunteers, along with training from Cornerstones Community Partnerships, a nonprofit group based in Santa Fe will be restoring this historic property by implementing repoint masonry, a tradional building practice using lime-based mortar. "Cornerstones works in partnership with communities to restore historic buildings and has a national reputation for creative use of historic preservation as a tool for community revitalization." Nancy did a great job, and mentioned that after the meeting she learned some valuable information about the Waterworks property form Kiwanis members and lifelong Silver City residents, Mary Soule and Bob Humphrey!

August 23rd-- Special guest was Barbara Nance, Volunteer and Event Coordinator at the Silver City Museum
A very nice presentation by Barbara covered some exciting new changes, new programs, and Centinieal plans underways at the Silver City Muesum.
A little about our guest speaker: Barbara enjoyed 21 years as a professional illustrator and cartoonist in L.A.. She went on to manage a gallery in California for 14 years, while being represented in several California coastal galleries. Her work has appeared in film and on television, wine labels, prints, clothing and other merchandise. She is part of the Silver City Gallery Association and has the Barbara Nance Gallery / Stonewalker Studio located on 10 acres.
It was a pleasure to have her visit with us about the exciting things happening at the museum. She encourages anyone who would like to become a member, volunteer or help the museum in any way to contact her.

August 16th-- Special guest was Bruce Ashburn, Small Business Development Center. Mr. Ashburn shared the latest about the SBDC located on the campus of WNMU. They have a very useful website that explains their services, purpose, and upcomming workshops to serve the needs of Grant, Luna, Hidalgo, and Catron County residents. http://www.nmsbdc.org/silvercity/
